From New York: the inimitable and wildly flamboyant Taylor Mac presents his latest work “The 20th Century Show,” an incredible visual feast and concert consisting of one song from each decade of the 20th Century (plus two encores) presented as “a performance ritual to help the audience let go of the 20th century and move into the 21st.”

Out in the Tropics is Miami’s first and only contemporary performing arts series specifically representing the GLBTQ art community…

This exhibition is part of the University of Miami’s homage to the theatrical innovations of Cuban playwright Virgilio Piñera Llera (1912-1979) on the 100^th anniversary of his birth.  Credited with having brought modernism to Latin American theatre and for writing the first theatre of the absurd play, Piñera is one of Latin America’s most important playwrights.

Caligula’s love devours everything:  his weakness for masculine bodies and his intent to seduce and trample the innocence of Escipion are simply examples of his passion for the impossible.  Others like Helicon act as his game pawns, while everybody contributes in one way or another to a string of endless manipulations in this cubanized version of Rome where bodies come with a price tag and desire tucked between their lips.  The desire to defeat a body that reflects the strength and vigor of his own youthful adolescence gives the tyrannical Caligula a contemporary face, making him into an icon armed behind the mask of gayness and the glamour of the most illustrious uniforms, thus inciting us to other forms of misconduct way beyond the sexual.

This ‘panel’ will be a conversation with Sean, his company and other local LGBTQ community members and activists around Sean’s work as a transgender artist, and the activity and importance of documenting and archiving LGBTQ stories.

As part of Miami Beach Sleepless Night 2011, FUNDarte proudly presents “Timba Battle” featuring Timbalive versus Tiempo Libre. Timbalive burst onto Miami’s music scene in August 2008 under the direction of founder Leo Garcia, offering the best of Cuban Music with a mix of rhythms from around the world. Timbalive is currently one of the largest and most successful Timba bands in the world. Three-time Grammy-nominated Tiempo Libre, under the direction of founder Jorge Gomez, is also one the hottest young Latin bands on the scene today. Equally at home in concert halls, jazz clubs and dance venues, the members of this Miami-based band are true modern heirs to the rich tradition of music from their native Cuba. Tiempo Libre’s members were all classically trained at Cuba’s premiere conservatory. This evening of musical  extravaganza is celebrated for its incendiary, joyful performances of timba, and an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of high-voltage Latin jazz in a non-stop three-hour dance concert!

Performing for the first time in the US, Cuban Diva Osdalgia is one of the most celebrated voices making music toady on the island. The voice of a new generation of artists, Osdalgia, thrills audiences with her beauty, her humor and most importantly her smoldering voice.

Fresh off the release of their latest album, Despierta, the seminal Cuban rap group Doble Filo makes their US debut. Fusing traditional Cuban rhythms, jazz, rock and Hip Hop, Doble Filo is one of Cuba’s most acclaimed Hip Hop groups. With a stage show that radiates energy and includes a live band and video, Doble Filo will blow you away with their powerful lyrics and funky flow.

Guest musicians: Malena Burke, Placido Domingo Jr., Arthur Hanlon, Aymee Nuviola, Pepito Gomez, Philbert Almenteros & Los Herederos celebrate the repertoire of the legendary Cuban singer of all time...

This evening will feature excerpts of work by three of the most provocative solo Hip Hop theater artists in Miami. Previously commissioned by Miami Light Project as part of Here & Now 2008, Rudi Goblen’s Insanity Isn’t is a dance and spoken word whirlwind of 9 to 5 mania. Marking the first performance in Florida, Audelco award winner Summer Hill Seven’s Shakespeare N. Haarlem is about a poet sentenced to death for the new crime of lyrical terrorism. Fresh off a successful London tour, Meshaun Lebrone’s award winning Right To Remain is a glimpse into late rapper Tupac Shakur’s internal struggle with race, power, fame and infamy.

Two musicians  – one from Spain, one from Cuba – join together in the duo Mestizaje to create a unique contemporary acoustic  fusion of soul, folk and pop music. Beatriz Luengo and Yadam, each already well-known in Europe as independent artists, sing songs of love, of identity and the journey of immigration, celebrating the warmth and the struggles of the human condition. This very special concert brings the positive vibe of Mestizaje, backed by a group South Florida musicians, to Miami for the first time!

South Florida-based singer Anabel has been a member of such groups as Salsabrava and Retrozon, as well as pursuing her solo career as an interpreter of diverse musical styles, including salsa, bolero and son. Since 2005 Anabel has led her own group, Ke o Ke, showcasing her unique fusion style. She has shared the stage with musicians such as Willy Chirino. Albita Rodriguez and Cachao. Take a hip-shaking musical journey through contemporary Latin musical genres just steps away from the ocean in a beautiful outdoor setting.

Keeping the party going all night, DJs Snowhite and Duni will spin in the Fillmore lobby between performance sets. Born in Cuba, DJ Duni is Miami-based and has been promoting Cuban Music for the last 10 years as partial owner of timbastars.com, a website dedicated to promoting timba throughout the world. Born in Cuba and raised in Queens, DJ Snowhite is one of Miami’s leading and most innovative soundscape designers and turntable curators

Two concerts at the beautiful Miami Beach's Art Deco Colony Theater with some of the best of emerging Contemporary World Music artists! The night begins with Russian Red, the stage name for Lourdes Hernández, a singer-songwriter based in Madrid, Spain. Her beautifully crafted, minimal songs beam delicate folk harmonies and lustrous vocals, originally formed in 2007, by Lourdes and Brian Hunt. The moniker for Lourdes comes from a lipstick color she frequently uses. The evenings closes with Singer-songwriter Alex*Cuba who's trademark sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and rock chords subtly subvert commonly held notions of what Cuban music is. Alex is the vanguard, crafting a cross-cultural sound. Not tied to tradition, this Cuban-Canadian prefers his vintage Gibson over el sencerro (cowbell) anytime.
